Most WooCommerce stores get fewer reviews than they could. The barrier is usually that customers are not asked at the right time and in the right way. Here is how to build a WooCommerce review collection process that actually produces results.
The Timing Problem
The most common mistake is sending review request emails immediately after an order is marked Completed. For physical products, Completed often triggers when the item ships, not when it arrives. Asking for a review before the customer has received the product is ineffective at best and annoying at worst.
For physical products: send the review request 7-14 days after the order Completed status, giving the customer time to receive and use the product. For digital products and services: 2-3 days after delivery is typically appropriate.
Setting Up Review Request Emails
WooCommerce core does not send review request emails. The Customer Reviews for WooCommerce plugin adds this. After installing:
- Go to the plugin settings and set the delay in days after Completed status.
- Configure the email subject and body. Keep it short and direct: “Hi [name], how was your [product name]? We would love your feedback.”
- Link directly to the product page’s Reviews tab to minimise friction.
- Set up a follow-up reminder for customers who do not respond to the first request (7 days later is typical).
- Include an unsubscribe option — this is legally required in many jurisdictions and reduces spam complaints.
Making the Review Form Easy to Use
The default WooCommerce review form requires customers to scroll to the Reviews tab, click it, scroll to the form, and submit. Reduce this friction:
- Link directly to the Reviews tab in your email using an anchor: yoursite.com/product/product-name/#reviews
- Ensure the Reviews tab is visible and the form is easy to find on the product page.
- Test the review submission process on mobile — most customers read email on mobile and may be submitting reviews on their phone.
Responding to Reviews
Responding to reviews — both positive and critical — signals to potential customers that you pay attention and care about their experience. WooCommerce reviews are based on WordPress comments, so you respond through the WordPress Comments screen. A consistent response practice also generates more review activity as customers see their feedback acknowledged.
Photo Reviews for Higher Conversion
Reviews with photos convert better than text-only reviews. The Customer Reviews for WooCommerce plugin and Judge.me allow customers to attach photos to their review. Photo reviews require slightly more effort from the reviewer, so they are rarer — but when you have them, they carry significant social proof weight. Incentivise photo reviews with a small discount on the next purchase if your business model allows it.
Dealing With Negative Reviews
Negative reviews should not be hidden or deleted unless they contain false information or violate community guidelines. A mix of positive and critical reviews is more credible to potential buyers than a perfect 5.0 rating. Respond to negative reviews professionally, acknowledge the issue, and explain what you did or will do to address it. This response is as much for future readers as for the original reviewer.
For WooCommerce review automation setup, third-party review platform integration, and review schema configuration for SEO, a WordPress developer can implement a complete review collection and display strategy.
