How to Set Up Smash Balloon Instagram Feed the Right Way

Smash Balloon Instagram Feed is the most widely used Instagram feed plugin for WordPress. The setup process changed significantly after Meta restricted third-party API access in 2018 and again in 2023 – you now connect through Meta’s official API rather than a simple username lookup, which is more reliable but requires more steps to configure correctly.

Connecting Your Instagram Account

Go to Instagram Feed -> Settings -> Connect an Instagram Account. You have two account types to choose from. A Personal account connects directly through Instagram OAuth and is appropriate for creators and individuals displaying their own content. A Business account connects through a Facebook Page linked to your Instagram Business profile and gives you access to additional data including hashtag feeds and tagged content.

For the Business account connection: your Instagram must be set to a Professional account (Business or Creator) in the Instagram app settings, and it must be linked to a Facebook Page you admin. The connection flow asks you to log into Facebook, select the Page, and grant permissions. If the connection fails, the most common reason is that the Instagram account is not properly linked to the Facebook Page – verify this in your Facebook Page settings under Connected Instagram Account before retrying.

Configuring the Feed

After connecting, go to Instagram Feed -> All Feeds -> Create New. Select the feed type: User Timeline (your posts), Tagged Posts (posts where your account is tagged – Business only), Hashtag (posts with a specific hashtag – Business only), or a combination.

Key display settings worth configuring before embedding:

  • Number of posts – how many posts to show. The free version shows up to 9; Pro removes this limit.
  • Columns – set different column counts per device breakpoint. Three columns on desktop, two on tablet, one on mobile is a common starting configuration.
  • Image size – Thumbnail, Low, Standard, or High resolution. Standard is the right balance for most sites.
  • Like and comment counts – shown in the hover overlay on desktop.
  • Caption – whether to show post captions below images.

Embedding the Feed

Copy the shortcode from the feed editor and paste it into any page or post. The shortcode format is [instagram-feed feed=X] where X is the feed ID. Alternatively, use the Instagram Feed block in the Gutenberg editor. For widget areas, the plugin adds an Instagram Feed widget to Appearance -> Widgets.

For Elementor users: Smash Balloon Pro adds a native Elementor widget. The free version requires dropping the shortcode into an Elementor shortcode element.

Fixing a Feed That Shows Placeholder Images or Fails to Load

If the feed shows grey placeholder images instead of your Instagram posts, the API connection has broken. This happens when Instagram tokens expire (they last about 60 days without refresh), when you change your Instagram password, or when you revoke app permissions. Go to Instagram Feed -> Settings -> Connected Accounts and check the token status. If the token is expired, click Refresh or reconnect the account. Smash Balloon automatically refreshes tokens before expiry when the site has regular traffic, but low-traffic sites may miss the automatic refresh window.
