How to Build a Photography Portfolio in WordPress with Modula

Modula is a strong choice for photography portfolio galleries because of its custom grid system that accommodates different aspect ratios without cropping. Here is how to build a professional portfolio with it.

Why Modula Works Well for Photography Portfolios

Standard grid gallery plugins crop all images to a uniform size, which works for product photography but destroys the composition of artistic photography. Modula’s Custom Grid mode lets you set per-image sizes within the grid, preserving the original composition. This is the key differentiator for photography portfolios.

Creating Your First Gallery

  1. Go to Modula, then Add Gallery.
  2. Give the gallery a name (this is also the page title if displayed via a dedicated gallery page).
  3. Click Add Images and select photos from the media library. Upload new photos if needed.
  4. In Gallery Settings on the right, choose Custom Grid under Grid Type. This enables per-image sizing.
  5. Back in the gallery, drag the corner of each image card to resize it within the grid. Modula shows a preview of the layout as you adjust.
  6. Set the gallery width to 100% and columns to 3 or 4 depending on your image content and theme layout.

Configuring the Lightbox

Go to Gallery Settings, then Lightbox. Enable the Modula lightbox for full-size image viewing. Configure:

  • Lightbox effects — Fade or slide transition between images in the lightbox.
  • Lightbox captions — Show or hide the image title and description in the lightbox. For portfolio photography, a clean minimalist lightbox without text often works better.
  • Loop — Whether the lightbox loops from last to first image.
  • Deep linking — Enables individual image URLs for sharing specific photos.

Adding Image Metadata

For each image in the gallery, click the edit icon to add:

  • Title — The photo name. Used in lightbox caption and alt text.
  • Description — Additional context (location, camera settings, print availability).
  • Alt text — Required for accessibility. Describe what is in the photo, not just a filename.
  • URL — Link the image to a separate page if you sell prints or have a dedicated photo page.

Organising by Portfolio Category

Create separate galleries for each portfolio category — Portraits, Landscapes, Commercial, Weddings. Place each gallery on a dedicated page. Create a portfolio landing page that links to each category gallery. This gives visitors clear navigation and gives each portfolio category its own indexable page for SEO.

Modula Pro includes filtering within a single gallery, which lets visitors filter a mixed portfolio by category without leaving the page. Useful for portfolios with modest image counts where showing everything in one gallery is preferable.

Enabling Watermarks (Pro)

Go to the gallery settings and find the Watermark section (requires Modula Business plan or above). Upload your logo as a PNG with transparent background. Set position, scale, and opacity. Save and test on a gallery page to verify the watermark appears correctly on your images.

Performance for Image-Heavy Galleries

Modula includes lazy loading for gallery images by default — images below the fold load only when scrolled into view. Enable this in gallery settings. Use WebP format for all gallery images before upload for smaller file sizes. For galleries with many images, consider splitting very large galleries across multiple pages rather than loading 100+ images on one page.
