A pet services directory is a practical niche directory concept – pet owners search for groomers, vets, dog walkers, kennels, and pet shops in their area, and finding quality local options is genuinely difficult. The directory concept works because local search intent is high and Google’s own results for “[pet service] near me” are often cluttered with national aggregators that do not serve local needs well.
Choosing the Right Plugin for a Pet Services Directory
The right plugin depends on whether your directory will primarily connect pet owners with service providers, or whether service providers will transact through your platform. For a referral-based directory (pet owner finds a groomer, contacts them directly), GeoDirectory or Directorist are appropriate – they are listing directories with location search. For a booking-enabled directory where pet owners book and pay for services through the platform, HivePress with the Marketplace extension is more appropriate – it handles transactions and the two-sided relationship between providers and clients.
For this walkthrough, we build with HivePress because the booking-enabled model provides more value to both sides and creates a stronger competitive position than a pure referral directory. A pet services directory where you can book a grooming appointment or a dog walking session directly is more useful than one that just shows a phone number.
Step 1: Configure Service Categories and Attributes
Pet services cover significantly different businesses. Create clear categories that help pet owners navigate: Vets and Animal Hospitals, Dog Grooming, Dog Walking, Pet Sitting and Boarding, Dog Training, Pet Shops and Supplies, Pet Photography. Each category may need different attributes – a dog grooming listing needs different information than a vet listing.
Go to HivePress -> Attributes and create these core attributes for all pet service listings:
- Service Type (Checkboxes) – the actual services offered within the category. A groomer might offer Full Groom, Bath and Brush, Nail Trim, Ear Cleaning.
- Animals Accepted (Checkboxes) – Dogs, Cats, Small Animals, Birds, Reptiles, Horses. Mark as filterable – many pet owners have non-dog pets and struggle to find services.
- Service Area (Text or Select) – for mobile services like dog walking, the areas they cover.
- Pricing Basis (Select) – Per Session, Per Hour, Per Night, Per Day.
- Insurance (Checkbox) – whether the provider is insured. Critical for animal care services.
- DBS/CRB Checked (Checkbox) – relevant for providers who visit homes.
- Capacity (Number) – for boarding kennels and pet sitters, how many pets they can take simultaneously.

Step 2: Provider Profiles
In HivePress, pet service providers register as vendors. Configure the vendor profile to collect information pet owners care about: years of experience, qualifications and certifications (pet first aid, grooming qualifications), photos of the workspace (important for kennels and home sitters), and a biography explaining their background with animals.
Require photo verification for vendors – providers with a profile photo get significantly more enquiries than those without. Consider implementing an application review process rather than instant approval. Manually reviewing applications lets you ensure quality standards before providers go live, which maintains the directory’s credibility with pet owners.
Step 3: Location and Search Configuration
Install the HivePress Geolocation extension. Pet owners search by proximity – “dog groomers near me” is the natural search behaviour. The geolocation extension adds a location field to the search form where visitors enter their postcode or address, and a radius selector. Listings within the specified radius of the searched location appear in results.
Configure the default search radius for your target market. For dense urban areas, 5km is a reasonable default. For rural areas, 20-30km may be more appropriate. Allow visitors to adjust the radius – a pet owner in central London wanting 2km results should not be forced to see results across 20km.
Step 4: Booking Configuration With HivePress Marketplace
The HivePress Marketplace extension adds order/booking functionality. Pet service providers configure their availability and pricing in their vendor dashboard. Pet owners place an order for a specific service at a specific time. Payment is collected by the platform and held until the service is completed.
Configure the booking workflow in HivePress -> Settings -> Marketplace. Key settings for pet services: the order acceptance window (how long providers have to confirm or decline a booking), delivery confirmation (how the service completion is marked – manually by the provider), and the release delay (how long after completion before payment releases to the provider).
Step 5: Reviews and Trust Building
Reviews are especially important for pet services because pet owners are entrusting strangers with family members. Install HivePress Reviews and configure post-booking review prompts. After a booking completes, automatically send the pet owner a review request email. Reviews should include a rating, text feedback, and the option to mention the specific pet (dogs love posting about their grooming experiences).
Display reviews prominently on provider profiles and listing pages. A provider with 50 reviews and a 4.8 rating gets more bookings than a provider with no reviews regardless of price. Encourage new providers to collect reviews from existing clients by offering a feedback form they can share outside the platform.
