Fluent Forms vs Gravity Forms vs WPForms: Which WordPress Form Plugin Is Right for Your Site

WordPress form plugin comparisons usually devolve into feature list wars. This comparison skips that in favour of the question that actually matters: which plugin fits your specific situation given what you need forms to do and what you are willing to spend. Fluent Forms, Gravity Forms, and WPForms are all capable – the differences show up in edge cases and cost.

Fluent Forms: Best Free Tier, WooCommerce Native

Fluent Forms free is the most capable free form plugin available. Conditional logic, multi-step forms, file uploads, and CRM integration in the free version puts it ahead of WPForms free and most of what Gravity Forms requires payment for. If you run the Fluent plugin suite (FluentCRM, FluentSMTP), Fluent Forms connects natively without additional configuration.

Fluent Forms Pro costs $59/year for a single site. The pro features that justify the upgrade: Stripe and PayPal payment forms, quiz and survey scoring, PDF generation from submissions, Slack/Zoom notifications, and advanced integrations. At $59/year versus Gravity Forms at $59-259/year, Fluent Forms is cheaper for equivalent functionality in most use cases.

Gravity Forms: Most Mature, Most Extensible

Gravity Forms has been the professional WordPress form standard since 2009. Its add-on library is extensive – specific CRM integrations (Salesforce, HubSpot), industry-specific tools (mortgage calculators, signature capture, Dropbox upload), and workflow automation through Gravity Flow. For complex enterprise forms with approval workflows, Gravity Forms handles scenarios Fluent Forms cannot.

Gravity Forms Basic ($59/year, 1 site) covers most needs. Elite ($259/year, unlimited sites) includes all add-ons. The add-on model means you can add specific functionality as needed rather than paying for everything upfront. The disadvantage is that advanced requirements accumulate add-on costs on top of the base license.

WPForms: Most Beginner-Friendly

WPForms prioritises ease of use above feature depth. The drag-and-drop builder is the most intuitive of the three – a non-technical user can create a professional contact form in under five minutes. WPForms Lite (free) is genuinely limited: no conditional logic, no file uploads, no multi-step forms. The paid version ($39.50-299.50/year) adds these features.

WPForms is the right choice when the person building forms is not technical and the form requirements are straightforward. The trade-off is that simple use cases cost more than Fluent Forms free, and complex use cases are less capable than Gravity Forms.

Performance Impact of Form Plugins

All three form plugins load their CSS and JavaScript on pages where forms are embedded. The asset footprint differs: Gravity Forms loads relatively lean assets. WPForms has a slightly larger footprint. Fluent Forms is comparable to Gravity Forms in asset size. For performance-critical sites, check whether the plugin is loading form assets on pages that do not have forms – all three can be configured to load assets only on pages where a form is present. In Fluent Forms, enable “Load FluentForms assets only on pages with forms” in Global Settings.

For sites where every millisecond matters (landing pages, checkout pages), test the page speed impact with your specific form plugin before going live. A contact form on a contact page is unlikely to cause performance issues. A multi-step registration form on a high-traffic landing page needs to be benchmarked specifically.

The Right Plugin for Common Scenarios

Registration forms for events or courses: Fluent Forms free covers this with multi-step, conditional logic, and email notifications. Payment required: Fluent Forms Pro handles Stripe/PayPal at lower cost than adding WooCommerce. Complex quote request forms with approval workflows: Gravity Forms with Gravity Flow. Simple contact form on a brochure site built by a designer: WPForms Lite or Fluent Forms free – both work. Integration with Salesforce or HubSpot: Gravity Forms has official add-ons; the others use Zapier.
