Why WP Sticky Sidebar Jumps Around on Mobile Scrolling

You enable WP Sticky Sidebar. On desktop, sidebar sticks perfectly. On mobile, sidebar jumps, flickers, or sticks at wrong position. That is frustrating because mobile users have bad experience.

A common issue is that mobile screens are too small for sticky sidebars. The sidebar has nowhere to stick. The plugin tries to stick, fails, jumps. The plugin is not broken. Mobile sticky sidebars are problematic.

Why WP Sticky Sidebar Jumps on Mobile

Sticky sidebars work by calculating element position and using CSS position:sticky or JavaScript. On mobile, viewport changes as user scrolls. Address bar appears/disappears. Orientation changes. These recalculations cause jumping. Sidebar tries to stick, unsticks, resticks.

This is not WP Sticky Sidebar being bad. Mobile browsers handle sticky poorly.

The Most Common Mobile Sticky Problems

  • Sidebar jumps up and down during scroll
  • Sidebar sticks too early or too late
  • Sidebar covers main content on mobile
  • Sidebar unsticks at bottom of page
  • Flickering when address bar hides

All are mobile browser issues.

How to Fix WP Sticky Sidebar on Mobile

  1. Go to WP Sticky Sidebar → Settings
  2. Enable “Disable on mobile” option
  3. Set mobile breakpoint to 768px
  4. Sidebar will not stick on mobile devices
  5. Sidebar still works on desktop and tablets
  6. Save settings and clear cache

Disabling on mobile is best practice.

Alternative: Use CSS Only Sticky (No Plugin)

Add this CSS for desktop only:

@media (min-width: 769px) {
.sidebar { position: sticky; top: 20px; }
}

This works without plugin. No jumping. No mobile issues. CSS sticky is supported on all modern browsers.

When to Use Sticky Sidebar on Mobile

Do not use sticky sidebars on mobile. Mobile screens are narrow. Sidebars take too much space. Move sidebar content to bottom of page on mobile. Use plugin or CSS to reposition.

Mobile users prefer scrolling, not sticky elements.
